Monica McAlister

Monica is a dedicated emergency management professional with a strong focus on public information and community engagement. She has completed both FEMA’s National Emergency Management Advanced Academy (NEMAA) and Advanced Public Information Officer (PIO) .

Monica currently serves as an instructor for the Public Information Basics course through the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) where she contributes to ongoing training initiatives, including Professional Emergency Manager (PEM) Program and the National Emergency Management Basic Academy (NEMBA).

In November 2025, Monica stepped into the Emergency Communications Specialist role with MSP/EMHSD.

Previously, Monica had been the Social Media Coordinator for the Charter Township of Fenton. In this role, she led efforts to modernize the Township’s communication strategy by developing public information policies, implementing a redesigned website, launching a citizen-facing app, and creating official social media accounts to enhance two-way communication with the public.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Davenport University and a Master of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management from Purdue University Global. Monica was selected to serve on the Government Social Media Association’s Training Committee for 2024, 2025, and 2026 and is a member of the National Information Officers Association (NIOA). Her contributions to local government were recognized when she was named one of the Top 100 Local Government Influencers by Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL) in both 2024 and 2025.

Monica is passionate about strengthening public trust in emergency management and advancing the field through effective communication and outreach.
